Lakeside Barndominium

Barndominium in Grand Lake, CO - 40x75x20

Steve, a Great Western customer in Colorado, has one of the most spectacular barndominiums we have seen! This 40 x 75 building was initially built with the intention of using it as a horse barn. However, Steve told GWB that it made more financial sense to use a portion of the building as a residence rather than opting to build a second structure as a house. The result perfectly shows how a barndominium can split the difference between a residential building and virtually any other use.

A Barndominium as Useful as It Is Gorgeous

The use of space inside this building is truly noteworthy. Steve and crew managed to maximize both usability and comfort by making the most of this building’s footprint.

“Four beds and three baths, 2,400 square feet on the house side and about 1,800 square feet on the garage side with another 600 square-foot mezzanine that’s raised in the garage for extra storage, and we turned it into a craft area,” said Steve.

Steve says that they decided to list the barndominium on AirBNB to generate revenue when they’re not using it. Despite being a newer listing, he reports that they had booked out the property for effectively the entire summer despite listing it around Memorial Day.

Why Did You Choose Great Western?

Steve told GWB that he started his initial building design with our 3D Building Design Tool, which allows you to size, customize, and visualize your building how you like it before submitting the design for a quote. He said they sprung for a metal building because the wooden structures they initially looked at were far more expensive. The added benefits of durability, fire resistance, and longevity of a metal building made it their ideal solution.

“Just thinking about long-term wear and tear and care. Everyone up there, all my neighbors, they’re painting their house every five years. They’re patching splintered wood, rot damage, and everything else. So, for the longevity of a metal building, you know, the frame will last forever, and I think you can count on a good 30 or 40 years out of the siding and the roof,” Steve said.

How Was Your GWB Experience?

Steve says he was thrilled with the communication he had with our team throughout the production of his building. This allowed him to precisely schedule timeframes with subcontractors and ensured a smooth process from ordering to completion.

“Understanding when the materials would get there, what delays were happening on their end because of the steel shortage and the steel crisis, and then be able to plan on a very short build windows up there, which are barely only five months when you don’t have frozen ground and snow all over the place,” said Steve

He went on to say that our team at GWB helped to resolve minor issues on-site to ensure his building went up without a hitch.

It’s worth noting that Steve initially purchased his building during the pandemic, which caused substantial supply chain issues and shortages. For current expected lead times on your building, please contact a member of our team.
