One of the most outstanding advantages of choosing a steel building over wood for your shop, garage, or home is its inherent fire resistance. It’s something we’re quite fond of advertising, but it’s a bit sobering when we receive a customer that, unfortunately, has experience with losing a building to a fire.
Tate Hermanson, a GWB customer from Hudson, Colorado, unfortunately, is one of these unique cases. His family’s barn structure suffered a fire that ultimately led to its destruction. When it came time to replace the structure, Hermanson and family turned to us here at Great Western to go all-out on their dream steel building with all the bells and whistles.
Tate and crew opted for a 40 x 70 steel Great Western Building kit with full insulation and a covered patio area on one side of the building. It’s outfitted with extensive electrical support for Hermanson’s welding, woodworking, and security system. In addition, he told us that they’ve added exterior GFIs to support a full camera and sensor security system, and to future proof their buildings uses. In addition, they installed three 80-amp 220V lines and 110V outlets every 10 feet to ensure enough power for just about anything.

Hermanson also decided to integrate a 2/3 partition wall to adequately divide space in the building for any future use cases that may benefit from separate partitions. So, things like a dedicated welding or woodworking shop or even a residential space for a Barndominium conversion are on the table! You can never have too much space, and having a pre-engineered futureproof plan like this is a great idea!
In addition, Hermanson’s building went through a few different iterations throughout the design and manufacturing process.
“I also want to thank Great Western,” Hermanson said during his interview with us, “They’ve been outstanding in helping me every step of the way from the original design to the redesign. Then, we did a color chance and they were able to stay on top of that and get me exactly what I ordered and on time,” he continued.
We’re very happy to have accommodated Tate and his family, and, moreover, we’re thrilled that they are happy with their purchase. Losing a structure and personal belongings in a fire is an extremely tough thing to overcome. So, we’re glad we could help provide them with not only a replacement for their lost property, but a bit of peace of mind in knowing how much more fire resistant a steel structure is than a classic wooden one.
