“I’m really proud of the look of the building. It’s not a typical metal building.”
We absolutely love seeing gorgeous hybrids of wood and steel, and our customers here at Great Western Building seem to have an amazing knack for it. When it comes to erecting a building to blend in with its surroundings while retaining the benefits of building with steel, our clients knock it clean out of the park!
This building, built by GWB customer Rob Kennedy, is a prime example. It started life as a standard 30 x 45 single-slope bolt-together Great Western Buildings steel building kit. However, Rob sought out to make it match his house and its surroundings in the great outdoors near Granby, Colorado.

Rob teamed up with a friend, who happens to be a professional contractor, to erect this building himself. He told GWB in his recent video interview that neither of them had experience erecting a steel building, but they figured it out as they carried on with the building process.
“It was a labor of love,” said Rob, “All along the way, your team was here to help us when we got stumped on something.”
Rob says they would occasionally run into situations where things seemed not to fit right, but later realized they had overlooked small details. This is extremely common, as the amount of information in our industry-leading erection manual can be quite overwhelming. However, we take pride in our buildings being DIY-friendly. That’s why we offer 24/7 customer support, which Rob took advantage of during his build.
Rob told GWB that he wanted his new storage building to match his house as closely as possible.
“I was trying to match what my house looked like…I was able to find these ways to emulate, like, the bucking on the garage doors, which matches my home garage doors, and the overhangs,” Rob told GWB.
He also matched the tongue-and-groove Douglas Fir for his trim components as well as matching the same stain as the exterior wood elements on his house. Looking at the two side by side, it would be extremely difficult for most to recognize they were not built together. The matching elements, while retaining just a hair of difference via the steel components, make for, in our opinion, absolute perfection!
“Some people say, in my neighborhood, ‘hey, I wouldn’t mind living in that building, it’s quite nice,’ so I feel like I at least achieved the goal of making a fantastic building to house my stuff,” Rob told GWB.
