Aaron and Claudia wanted to stray away from the city and allow their family to get a little more in touch with nature. They purchased a bit of land with the intention of having an orchard and got to work making their dreams come true. It doesn’t get much more “off the grid” than this. In fact, it doesn’t even have an address. The end result is a beautiful building with a covered porch and a breathtaking surrounding view that genuinely drives feelings of peace and serenity.
Aaron specifies that they spent a lot of time looking at floor plans and layouts for standard houses and didn’t quite find anything that matched their desires. So, they landed on a rectangle shape as a starting point.
“It was like, well if we’re doing a rectangle, let’s do metal,” said Aaron.
He goes on to specify that the choice of a rectangle shape was also influenced by the fact that, given its simple layout, it makes the concrete cheaper.
Using the wide-open space of their Great Western Building, Aaron and Claudia took to making their dream home become a reality. Inside, they’re building out a full two-story living space and slowly chipping away at it on their own.
“You know, 30 years down the road, being able to look at it and point to those things that make it much more personal, and, you know, being able to joke about ‘hey, do you remember that window I broke while I was hauling it.’ All those little memories. That’s what’s special about it for us,” said Aaron.
Overall, Aaron and Claudia’s Barndominium project inspires those looking to do something similar! We’re happy to have been a part of it and look forward to seeing it once it’s complete.
