It’s no secret that if you’re into motorsports you’re going to need a good amount of space for both working on and storing your competitive vehicle of choice. In the case of Great Western customers The Bensons, the whole family gets behind the wheel in competitive racing. As one might expect, they’ve got a lot of equipment to haul. The Bensons joined GWB for an interview to discuss their motorsports experiences and their Great Western Buildings shop
“My brother and I started racing go-karts back when we were kids and kind of got into the sport that way. Then, as I got older, I started racing these mini springs and full-size sprint cars a little bit and eventually started my own business building these cars, selling parts, servicing…the highest level of what we do is World of Outlaws Sprint Car Racing and they travel all over the country and race professionally about 90 to 100 races a year,” said Nathan Benson.
Eric, Nathan, and Nathan’s son Benson all drive sprint cars. As you can imagine, having multiple competitive race cars requires quite a bit of space. Eric explains that they set out in search of a new shop and storage building and landed on Great Western during their searches
Eric explains that they erected the buildings themselves. As first-time builders, we’re glad to hear that their experience went so well, as we strive to make the erection process of our buildings intuitive and straightforward, even for those who aren’t experienced in construction.
“I did put it up myself. My dad helped every day with it. We had never put up a building before, but everything went together really well. I did the foundation and everything, so it was important to have all that stuff right and it was dead on,” said Eric.
He went on to explain that the most difficult part of the process for him was sheeting the roof. In addition, he does mention that they were missing a component, but they contacted Great Western and the missing piece was quickly sent out.
This project is a great example of DIY-ers looking to add more usable space and resale value to their property. A Great Western steel building is a phenomenal starting point for a shop, whether you’re in need of one for motorsports, woodworking, welding, or virtually any other use.
