With a wood structure, rotting, expanding, and contracting are all major drawbacks. These attributes of wood ultimately lead to required maintenance throughout the life of the building. Changes in weather and humidity can lead to screws loosening over time. The robust nature and overall longevity of a steel structure do not have the same maintenance and upkeep requirements as a wood structure. 

In addition, depending on span, wood structures may require the use of interior columns for support that eat into usable space. The wide-open space within a clear-span steel structure allows for more storage and mobility of machines and heavy equipment.

In general, the material cost of a metal building is more economical than a wooden one. There is some crossover depending on the size of the building and required materials based on climate needs. However, in the long run, the cost of maintenance and upkeep for a steel structure is less expensive than a wood pole barn. In addition, metal buildings are typically much cheaper to insure than wood structures.

A full concrete floor is not required for a Great Western Building agricultural metal building. Dirt, gravel, or Asphalt floors are all applicable and commonplace for structures like livestock shelters, hay storage buildings, and more. A proper foundation for anchoring the building’s columns is, however, required. Great Western Building Systems offers a handful of different ventilation systems for your structure. Among those offerings are cupolas, circular vents, and ridge vents. In addition, options like operable or static louvers and fans allow you to completely optimize your ideal ventilation system.

We strongly recommend using overhead sectional (garage) doors in your structure. They’re easy to install, affordable, and easy to maintain. In addition, they’re available with high-lift tracks, vertical tracks, or angled tracks to follow your building’s roof line. Sliding doors can run into issues with tracking, especially when dirt and debris build up in the door’s track. In addition, overhead sectional doors are available in a myriad of styles (glass panels, for example) to suit your specific styling desires. Our doors ship vendor direct for a smooth addition to your metal building project.

Bypass wall girts run on the outside flange of the primary building columns. A flush system has the outside flange of the girt in line with the outside flange. Because a flush girt terminates at the web of the building column they do not gain the strength of the overlap that is part of the bypass system. This is why a flush girt system is typically heavier and slightly more expensive than the stronger and more efficient bypass system. Roof purlins may also be run in a bypass or flush configuration.
