Frequently Asked Questions

Our industrial steel buildings will need to be expanded in the future, how can we plan ahead for this?

The easiest option for future expansion is to have one or two end-walls with a full-load rigid frame, this will allow for the building to become longer. While designing a building to be widened in the future is not as simple, our engineering team can provide that option as well.

What is the difference between a top-running and an under-hung bridge crane?

Both of these crane systems are designed to provide travel in the X and Y axis. Top-running cranes run on a rail (similar to a train track) placed on top of the crane beam that runs the length of the building. An under-hung crane is suspended on the bottom flange of an American I-beam (S-Beam) and the bridge hangs below. Top-running systems are more common and are more economical in high tonnage applications while under-hung cranes can be hung from rafters and are useful when hook height is at a premium. Both systems have other advantages and disadvantages that your team at Great Western can help you with.

What is hook height and how is it determined?

Hook height is a term used with crane systems to express the maximum amount of clearance under a cranes hook. Many factors determine or limit a crane’s hook height, e.g. building height, capacity, type of system and even the manufacturer of the crane. Let us know how much clearance is needed and we can guide you from there. If you have already selected a crane system and supplier we will take the specifications for that system and then design your steel building to accommodate the crane and your desired hook height.

Our building will be used for manufacturing and/or storage, and that process uses, stores or creates corrosive products, will this void any of our warranties?

Possibly. Speak with your Great Western representative to discuss the nature of any chemicals that may come into contact with your steel building. We have many products and design options available that may limit or protect against this exposure. If the resulting warranty issue or product failure is caused by poor maintenance or exposure to an abnormally corrosive environment your warranty will most likely not cover it. We also provide a complete maintenance guide and log with every building (upon request) to help.

Great Western’s custom design tool allows you to design, customize, and price the best metal building for your needs. You can also share and print your designs or save them and modify them later.
