Preston, one of our awesome customers, wanted a new building to add to his agricultural land out in Black Forest, Colorado. He set out for something more than just a steel box and wanted a more traditional “barn-esque” building. He went with one of our “Western” frame styles. Also commonly referred to as a Monitor, the high peak in the center of the building allows for larger equipment to be easily brought inside. With the addition of a lean-to, this barn is truly a do-it-all solution for Preston’s needs and we’re happy to have been a part of it!
Preston told GWB in a recent interview that he went with this building because he didn’t want a standard “steel box” shaped building.
“I wanted something that had both the look and the functionality of an agricultural building. To me, that meant a raised-center style barn…that gives me the capability of pulling equipment into the center bay that’s maybe taller than you might support with a normal garage door,” said Preston.
His building has large 12 x 16-foot overhead doors to accommodate things like RVs and other equipment that takes up a lot of real estate. Not only do we think it looks awesome, but we think it fits the atmosphere quite nicely! Fortunately, Preson seems to agree!
“It doesn’t exactly look like an old building, but it doesn’t catch your eye as an eyesore when you’re driving by,” said Preston.
Preston told GWB that he wanted to invest in a building that would last a lifetime. Specifically, he said “100 years or more.” We’re here for that kind of thinking, and that’s why we back our buildings with a lifetime structural warranty.
Preston also opted to go with solar power for this barn. Given the cost of running power to the property and the building’s limited use, modern solar solutions provide ample lighting and power for the building’s intended uses. The building is over a mile from the closest supply of power and Preston told GWB that an electrician gave him an estimate of “at least a quarter million dollars” to run power to the property. So, solar is a fantastic solution.
“I knew you could go off-grid for a hell of a lot less than a quarter million dollars. That buys an awful lot of solar…sufficient power to run, you know, lights, bandsaw, all of those and other loads. Then, since I’m not living here, it could take several days to charge back up in the middle of winter, and what do I care?” said Preston.
Overall, Preston’s building is a phenomenal example of what is possible with a steel building. Its off-the-grid power solution and custom agricultural-match styling alongside the DIY attitude makes it truly representative of what we stand for here at GWB! We love to see it and we’re so glad that we got to be a part of it. Moreover, we’re pleased that Preston got exactly what he needed!
